Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a form of hands-on treatment that looks at reducing pain, improving function and quality of life in people of all ages and walks of life. Osteopathy looks at the body as a “whole”. This means that we don’t just look to provide you with symptomatic relief but we try to look at why your pain has occurred, to prevent further reoccurrence of your symptoms.

Osteopathy was developed by Andrew Taylor Still in 1874 who was a doctor during the American civil war. Later on in life he became frustrated with the limitations of the current medical system, losing children of his own to diseases common in the 19th century. Through his studies he became to understand that the body could adapt and cope with disease better if hands on manipulation to areas that were either functioning poorly (i.e. muscular weakness, abnormal muscle firing or altered gait patterns) or had structural changes (muscular shortening/muscle +ligament strains and osteoarthritis). Since then osteopathy has been researched and developed further to become what is it today, an holistic whole-body approach to treatment.

Western Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment approach that has been used by the Chinese people to alleviate aliments for the past 3000 years. In New Zealand there are three different types of acupuncture practiced. These include traditional Chinese acupuncture, Western medical acupuncture and trigger point needling.

Western acupuncture works on the premise of neurological stimulation and the release neuro-chemicals, such as; endorphins, melatonin and serotonin, to assist with pain relief and general wellbeing. This promotes healing by increasing local blood flow to the injured tissue, by removing harmful inflammatory byproducts and supporting the formation of healthy tissue.

Treatment involves the insertion of very fine (width 0.15 to .30mm) one-time use, disposable needles. Acupuncture needles will be placed in “acu points”, which are typically found along the traditional meridian channels. These points are chosen because the bodies nerve endings have been found to be there in greater quantities, in comparison to other areas of your body. Therefore, needling at these points should generate bigger response, speeding up your recovery.

The location and duration of the needle insertion and retention can change between treatments and depends on your injury and the stage you are at with your recovery.

The points chosen by your practitioner are based on the “state” of the tissues around the site where the pain is being generated. Cheri may chose points away from the painful site. For example, if you are experiencing low back pain Cheri may choose points in your feet or legs as the acupuncture point lies along a dermatome (area of skin supplied by a spinal nerve) that is closely related to the site of injury. By doing this the acupuncture provides positive feedback into the spinal to “dull” or reduce the sensitivity of the area of pain.

Typically acupuncture takes between 10 to 40 minutes. More time is spent on acupuncture if there is no other hands on treatment. If Cheri incorporates Acupuncture with Osteopathic massage and manipulation, then the needling time frame is generally shorter. To stimulate the needles (enhance their effect) it may be necessary to twist the needle to produce the sensation known as chi. With this it is normal to feel warmth and tightness around the needle.

Pregnancy Care

Osteopathy and acupuncture are safe and effective treatment options for expectant mothers. As a result of pregnancy the body undergoes changes to allow for the growth and development of your baby. In some women this can lead to spinal and pelvic girdle pain, headaches, shortness of breath, reflux and many more aches and pains.

Treatment can help reduce your pain and help your musculoskeletal system adapt to the changing demands placed on your body as your pregnancy progresses. Treatment can also help the body prepare for a natural and safe birth.

Post pregnancy we can also help get you through aches and pains that occur from your new daily activities (lifting baby in/out of cot, carrying etc) and help guide you through strengthening exercises to help regain pelvic floor and abdominal weakness.
